FRESHWATER PEARLS

Freshwater cultured pearls are one of the most widely available and affordable pearls in the world. They are cultivated in lakes, rivers, and ponds, primarily in China, which dominates global production. Freshwater pearls are produced by the Hyriopsis cumingii and Hyriopsis schlegelii mussels, which can produce multiple pearls at once, making them more abundant than saltwater pearls.

These pearls are incredibly popular in North America, Europe, and Asia, thanks to their affordability, variety of shapes, and beautiful colors. Freshwater pearls are often used in fashion jewelry and bridal accessories, making them a favorite among young consumers and designers.

COLOR AND MOST VALUABLE SHADES

Freshwater pearls naturally come in a wide range of colors, including white, cream, peach, and lavender. Most popular color is classic white, often used in bridal jewelry. The most expensive color is metallic or deep lavender pearls, which are rare and highly valuable.

Many freshwater pearls are also dyed to achieve vibrant shades like blue, green, or black, catering to the fashion industry.

SIZE AND VALUE OF FRESHWATER PEARLS

Freshwater pearls are available in many sizes, typically ranging from 5 mm to 13 mm. The most common sizes are 6–8 mm, ideal for necklaces and earrings. The most popular size: 8–10 mm, offering a balance of elegance and affordability. The most expensive freshwater pearls are 10-11 mm and above, especially when round with high luster.

CULTIVATION

Unlike saltwater pearls, freshwater pearls are farmed in inland waters. The largest freshwater pearl farms are in China, with smaller-scale production in Japan and the USA. These pearls take 2–6 years to develop, depending on the size and quality desired.

Despite being more affordable, freshwater pearls have been worn by royalty and celebrities for centuries. Michelle Obama is often seen wearing classic white freshwater pearl necklaces. Audrey Hepburn and Princess Diana loved freshwater pearl jewelry for its timeless beauty.

One of the most famous freshwater pearls is the "Hope Pearl", an enormous baroque-shaped pearl that belonged to the British collector Henry Philip Hope. Freshwater pearls are perfect for everyday elegance, making them an essential piece in any jewelry collection.
